It’s a pretty well-known fact that online radio stations are struggling financially, due to ever-increasing royalty fees from record companies.
Almost all online streaming radio stations are hurting financially, whether they’re owned by a very small startup company or a major media corporation.
For the past 19 months, online radio stations and record companies have been battling it out, negotiating for some kind of middle ground when it comes to how much online radio stations should pay for the privilege of streaming music over the internet.
Despite the fact that they seem to have reached some kind of agreement, at least for the time being, the life of the online radio stations hangs in the balance, as they try to balance their budgets and squeak out some kind of profit.
One of the main stumbling blocks in the negotiations has been the fact that internet radio stations are required to pay royalties for each song they play, whereas broadcast radio stations pay nothing when they air an artist’s music.
All in all, it seems an unfair situation for internet broadcasters, and on ethat they aren’t likely to overcome too soon.
Somewhere there needs to be a middle ground, where the broadcasters, artists and record comapines can reach an equitable ad amicable agreement for all involved.
If that doesn’t happen soon, the internet radio airwaves may just go silent.
